George makes his first Q3 appearance with his Williams Racing team as he takes P8 ahead of Formula One’s Austrian Grand Prix.

It was a steady start to George’s Saturday as he ended the final practice session of the weekend in P14 after 23 laps of the Red Bull Ring ahead of the crucial qualifying sessions.

In Q1, George was able to able to climb into P10 after his first run in the session on a set of Soft compound Pirelli tyres. The Brit was pushed down two places into P12 before the end of the session but comfortably advanced into Q2.

For Q2, George joined the track with only 10 minutes remaining on the clock, opting for the Soft compound Pirelli tyres to put in his first run time. His first run placed him into P7 but he was quickly moved down the order into P9.

In the final minutes of Q2, George switched onto the Medium compound Pirellis to put in his final run and a chance at Q3. As the chequered flag came out, George delivered a blistering 1:04.553 lap time to move himself into Q3 for the first time with his Williams Racing team.

For Q3, George and the team opted for only one flying lap to put in a 1:04.591 lap time and place him in P9 for Sunday’s AustrianGP.

A post-qualifying penalty for Aston Martin Cognizant driver Sebastian Vettel promotes George into P8.

George Russell – Williams Racing Driver

“Qualifying was pretty special; we usually do well on Saturdays but that was on another level. I had a lot of confidence in the car, which really helped when it came to nailing my Q3 lap with only one shot. P9 in any circumstances is a great place to be but starting on the mediums with a few cars ahead on the soft tyres puts us in a strong position for the race and hopefully gives us a real advantage when it comes to making strategy decisions. I’m really pleased for the whole team; we’ve managed to keep the momentum going and this is thoroughly deserved after the struggles of last Sunday. I’m very excited for tomorrow.”

The Austrian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday July 4 from 2pm BST.
