An impressive final lap moved George through into Q2 and qualify in 14th ahead of the Portuguese Grand Prix.

A broken drain cover meant the qualifying session was pushed back by 30 minutes but when the lights went green, the Brit wasted little time in getting out on track to lay some rubber down and put in his laps.

George languished down in the knockout zone until the final moment of qualifying when he delivered a superb charge to move himself into 15th position and it’s Q2 for the seventh time.

Unfortunately, George was unable to advance past Q2 and will start from 14th on the grid, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

George Russell – Williams Racing Driver

“It is an amazing track and the car was feeling good. In the end, I think we were only a tenth and a half from P11 which is extraordinary for us. We are all pushing as hard as we can to get everything we can out of this car, we are making good progress and the hard work is paying off. We have a car that is more optimised for the race tomorrow, but we will have to wait and see how it unfolds as nobody knows how the tyres are going to handle this new circuit as FP2 got cut short. It will be exciting, potentially with a bit of rain on the way, and I will be giving it everything I have got.”

The Portuguese Grand Prix will begin at 13:10 GMT on Sunday.
