George Russell concluded his maiden season in Formula One at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, recording 17th place for ROKiT Williams Racing.

Following a thrilling fight at Interlagos in Brazil, Formula One flew to the United Arab Emirates for the final Grand Prix of the 2019 season in Abu Dhabi.

Holding many special memories at the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit - having sealed the FIA Formula Two Championship title at the venue with a spectacular victory in 2018 - George showcased his class throughout the weekend.

Continually improving in every session, George outpaced team-mate Robert Kubica for the 21st time this season in qualifying, maintaining his 100% qualifying record against the Pole over the entirety of 2019.

Lining up on the grid in 18th place following a grid penalty for Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, George started the 55-lap affair on the Hard compound tyres, extending his opening stint to run long into Grand Prix.

On lap 34, George swapped his Hard tyres for a set of faster but less durable Mediums, utilising a one-stop strategy to take 17th place as the chequered flag waved, finishing ahead of Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly and team-mate Kubica.

“It was quite a fun but tough race, and the pace was relatively good. I didn’t make a strong start and a few people overtook me.
After the pitstop the pace was strong for us, and I was pleased with the last half of the race.”

With the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marking the final race of 2019, George has completed his maiden season in Formula One.

Remaining with ROKiT Williams Racing for 2020, George will embark on his second season at the pinnacle of motorsport in Australia, on March 13-15.
